In October 2015, Joel Wu departed on a year-long trip around the world. He claimed that he wanted the narrative of his life to make for "a good story." The lyrics to "Five by Five" were inspired by conversations he and bandmate, Maryjo Mattea had when she met up with him in Scandinavia in August 2016. An ethicist by training, Wu spoke of the nature of "right and wrong," the concepts of "progress" and "justice," and the notion of life as a narrative. With Wu as her muse, songwriter Mattea incorporated these ideas into this song.
